Once the winter holiday season comes to an end, we spend hours of our time researching how to get fit for summer and pouring over articles on how to get that perfect beach body ready for our summer holiday. But what happens then? For many of us, getting into shape isn’t just a temporary goal, but more of a permanent journey. Although holidays come with temptations; cocktails on the beach, ice cream for breakfast and sizzling steak dinners don’t have to throw you off your fitness journey.
Below are my top 5 tried and tested holiday tips for staying fit and getting in that extra bit of exercise whilst still having the relaxing holiday you deserve!
- Drink water.
This is probably the most important tip for staying fit and healthy on holiday. Not only will it keep you hydrated, which is especially important when it’s hot and sunny, but studies have shown that water speeds up your metabolism, making it easier to burn more calories throughout the day and keep fit overall! If you’re anything like me, and forget to drink enough water, try a time marked water bottle. These have times printed onto the bottle, helping you keep on track of how much water you should be consuming per hour.
- Take advantage of your surroundings.
Holidays aren’t only great for lying by the pool and relaxing on the beach, they’re a wonderful opportunity for exploring culture and new surroundings. Go sightseeing, cycle around local villages, explore the city to the fullest and you will reap the benefits. Walking is a great way of staying fit, and won’t feel like exercise if you’re distracted the beauty of your surroundings.
Bonus tip: Wear trainers or shoes suitable for walking to prevent any pain or blisters!
- Use the hotel facilities.
Hotels often have gyms that are open to guests for a small fee or offer morning yoga on the beach or by the pool. Yoga isn’t just great for keeping a fit body, it has incredible effects on the mind too. Ask the front desk about any activities the hotel provides and give them a try.
- Download fitness apps.
There are various fitness apps that provide short 5-10 minute workouts for you to easily follow along to in your hotel room. A lot of the workouts don’t require any equipment, so have a browse through the app store and find something that works for you!
Bonus tip: Turn the app notifications on. This way you will get workout reminders and will have no excuse!
- Get creative.
Whether it’s playing frisbee on the beach, using a skipping rope to add a nice boost into your morning routine or playing beach volleyball, get creative with exercise and have fun!
So there you have it, staying fit on holiday may be easier than previously thought. It doesn’t have to break the bank either; by using voucher and discount codes, you can save on equipment costs which will allow more funds to be dedicated to those cheeky Pina Coladas we will all be ravishing by the pool.
